As we wrote a few months ago, people search site MyLife may have a ton of traffic from searches, but doesn’t really have the social elements that Facebook and LinkedIn offers. Today, the people search site is launching a number of features to help increase engagement on the site.

MyLife is a full-fledged search engine which not only finds people—thanks to aggregated search across social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, and MySpace—but also helps visitors connect with them all on the same site. MyLife pulls information from public records and also allows users to subscribe to the search site to connect with others, track their searches and more.

Website speed has always been a big issue, and it has become even more important since April 2010, when Google decided to use it in search rankings. However, the focus of the discussion is generally on minimizing file sizes, improving server settings and optimizing CSS and Javascript.

The discussion glosses over another important factor: the speed with which your pages are actually put together on your server. Most big modern websites store their information in a database and use a language such as PHP or ASP to extract it, turn it into HTML and send it to the Web browser.

So, even if you get your home page down to 1.5 seconds (Google’s threshold for being considered a “fast” website), you can still frustrate customers if your search page takes too much time to respond, or if the product pages load quickly but the “Customer reviews” delay for several seconds.

Textastic, the best web development app for iPad →

It’s true. After my article on the subject, Textastic pushed an update that brought in a fairly complete remote file manager that can connect to FTP servers and Dropbox accounts. You can not just transfer files manually, but Textastic maintains a link to every downloaded file, so you can quickly save and upload files right while editing. It has also gained a fullscreen editor. It could use some features like code auto-completion, gesture based cursor movement, and a better web preview, which still doesn’t do linked CSS files.
